City Center In LasVegas

Thousands flock to Aria for glitzy unveiling
4,000-room casino-resort is crown jewel of $8.5 billion CityCenter complex

LAS VEGAS - Visitors by the thousand streamed into the newest casino-resort on the Las Vegas strip early Thursday, an influx that casino officials hope will help yank Sin City from its two-year economic funk.
Fireworks and fanfare inaugurated the official launch of the Aria Resort & Casino, the 4,000-room, 61-story centerpiece of the $8.5 billion CityCenter complex. Crowds began swarming through the doors around midnight, welcomed with cheers and dozens of photographers snapping pictures. Models stood at aisleways and casino executives greeted guests, and hundreds got a preview of an Elvis-themed Cirque du Soleil show to debut in February.
"It's beautiful," said 73-year-old retiree Bernard Bouley of Saint Jerome, Canada, about 30 miles from Montreal.

Welcome to San Francisco

Chinatown The entrance to Chinatown at Grant Avenue and Bush Street is called the "Dragon's Gate." Inside are 24 blocks of hustle and bustle, most of it taking place right along Grant Avenue, the oldest street in San Francisco. Exotic shops, renowned restaurants, food markets, temples and small museums comprise its boundaries. Each February, Chinatown is the focal point for the city's Chinese New Year, a week of festivities culminating with a huge downtown parade, replete with dancing dragons.

North Beach
North Beach, rich in Italian heritage, includes cabarets, jazz clubs, galleries, inns, restaurants, bakeries and delicatessens -- a perfect spot for cappuccino and espresso. Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill is blessed with marvelous views and famed Diego Rivera murals on the ground floor.
Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $3 collected when entering San Francisco.
San Francisco Zoo
The zoo opens new habitats all the time, but Gorilla World, Koala Crossing and the Primate Discovery Center are still the top draws. Youngsters can feed, pet and play with barnyard animals in the Children's Zoo. For times and more information, call 415-753-7083

TEXAS

Central Texas and the Hill Country have some of the most scenic views and much of the best history in Texas. There is so much to see and do. I specialize in taking my guests down the historic back roads to the small towns and rural places that are the real Texas that most out of state tourists rarely get to see. We go to rodeos, to old dancehalls and bars to hear Texas music, on Bar B Q quests, to fairs and festivals, on wildflower hunts, to the best Texas has to offer. We leave when we want to, go where we want to, stop where we want for as long as we want and leave when we are ready to go. No rush, no delays. All of our trips start in San Antonio or Austin.

Central Texas is seldom visited by out of state visitors. This is where the earliest settlement and much of Texas history took place. A landscape made up of gently rolling hills covered with a mix of fields and woods crossed by three major rivers. It is dotted with wonderfully colorful and historic towns and places. More.

Old Faithful Geyser of California

Calistoga, California

In a world of modern plumbing, it's hell being a geyser. Travelers of past centuries stood and watched, agog, as heated water blasted heavenward from rocky fissures. It was a true mystery. Today you get the same effect from a broken fire hydrant or the fountain show at the Bellagio.

With a geyser, it's important to keep in mind that the phenomenon is not manipulated by Man: it's an underground river encountering hot magma deep in the earth and squirting for its own amusement -- not your vacation convenience. Three geothermal geysers in the world are predictable, erupting as if set on clocks, and are called Old Faithfuls.

Historically, California's Old Faithful erupts every 45 minutes -- at least since it was fenced off years ago and offered back to the admission-paying public. An impressive entrance gate and ample parking suggests California's Old Faithful is a popular Napa Valley attraction, a stop on a day trip that might include a one of several hundred local wineries and the nearby Petrified Forest.
